Good condition for the age of the firearm. Has common handling wear, and the metal work has a fair amount of surface rust. Bore is dark and pitted.

This U.S. Springfield has a manufacture date of 1891, scrawled into the left side of the grip above the trigger. Replacing the previous trapdoor Model 1873 Springfield, the Model 1884 was the standard U.S. military issued rifle from 1884-1903. Featuring a 32.5" barrel, trapdoor breech loading, striker fired, bladed front sight and "Buffington" rear sight, sling studs, and full wooden stock.
Dramatically increasing the rate of fire on the battlefield, the "Trapdoor" series of Springfield's gave U.S. soldiers the edge. The ability to clear and reload the chamber from the breach in a matter of seconds. Compared to the much longer and less consistent muzzle loading of a percussion muzzleloader and sometimes flintlock muzzleloaders still being used.
